Box Score 2 Johnson, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon softball team held off Northern Vermont University-Johnson in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader, then came from behind to complete the sweep of the host Badgers. Game one was a North Atlantic Conference contest, while game two was a non-conference affair. With Saturday's two wins, Lyndon improves to 13-9 on the season and 4-2 in NAC play. The 13 wins are the most by a Hornet team since Lyndon rejoined Division III and joined the NAC, eclipsing the previous high water mark of 11 wins, set in both 2012 and 2013. Johnson falls to 1-24 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.
Game 1 - NVU-Lyndon 10, NVU-Johnson 5
The Hornets pounded out 16 hits, including home runs from Blake Southworth (Bethel, VT) and Riann Fortin (Derby, VT). Southworth drove in three runs and made a big catch in center field to end a Johnson threat, after the Badgers had loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning. Victoria Valentine (Lyndon, VT) was four for four at the plate, while Jordan Adams (Lyndon, VT) was three for three.
Ella Embry and Jenavieve Rapoza both homered for Johnson and had two hits in the game. Evelyn Brubaker had a double and a single, and Savannah Dufresene had a pair of base hits.
Valentine went the distance in the circle, allowing five earned runs and 13 hits, to pick up the win. Badger starter Alexis Fleischer took the loss after going five innings and allowing six runs on ten hits.
Game 2 - NVU-Lyndon 9, NVU-Johnson 8
The Hornets trailed by five runs after two innings before rallying. Claudia Knapp's (Howell, NJ) base hit in the top of the sixth inning brought in Amber Everett (Morrisville, VT) with the tying run, then Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Southworth with the go ahead run.
Knapp was three for four with a pair of runs batted in. Southworth hit her second home run of the afternoon, while Porter had a double and a single and Seairra Anderson (Somersworth, NH) notched two base hits. The Badgers had 12 singles and no extra base hits in the game. Allyson Hefner had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs.
Caitlin Haggett (St. Johnsbury, VT) started for the Hornets, but was relieved by Valentine in the fourth inning. Valentine shut the Badgers out over the final four innings to earn the win. Rapoza started for Johnson and took the loss, allowing nine runs on 11 hits over 5.1 innings.
The Hornets and Badgers will square off again in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Lyndon's Skip Pound Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
