Lyndonville, VT - The University of Maine at Farmington scored three times in a 13 minute stretch in the first half and made it stand up, holding off Northern Vermont University-Lyndon for a 3-1 North Atlantic Conference women's soccer victory. The Beavers improved to 4-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference. The Hornets fell to 2-6-1 on the season and 1-3 in conference.
Neither team was able to break through in the early going. Then in the 27th minute, a Beaver pass deflected off of a Hornet defender and right to UMF's Grace Mahmood, who was able to beat Lyndon goalkeepeer Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) from point blank range. Less than three minutes later the Beavers scored again when Emily Boyle found Sydney Belanger at the top of the box and Belanger lifted a shot over Cordwell.
In the 40th minute, Audrey Fletcher took a throw-in from Hannah Wilbur, beat her defender, then beat Cordwell to make it 3-0, Beavers. Lyndon got on the board in the 43rd minute when Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) was pulled down in the box. Fortin then blasted a penalty kick past UMF keeper Paige Gonya, pulling the Hornets to within 3-1 at halftime.
Cordwell came up big in goal for the Hornets in the second half. She stopped all nine UMF shots on goal to keep Lyndon in the game. However, Lyndon was unable to generate any offense, and didn't have a shot on goal in the second half.
UMF outshot Lyndon 27-6 for the game. The Beavers also posessed the ball 64% of the time. Cordwell finished with 12 saves, while Gonya was only called on to make one save.
The Hornets return to action next Saturday, when they travel to Cazenovia College for a NAC crossover match. Game time is 4:30 pm.
