Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Early goal stands up as Paul Smith's edges Hornet men's soccer

Lyndonville, VT - Paul Smith's College scored on their first rush up the field, just 32 seconds into Sunday's men's soccer game against Northern Vermont University-Lyndon.  That goal stood up, as the visiting Bobcats edged the Hornets, 1-0.  Paul Smith's improves to 2-0 on the season while Lyndon falls to 0-2.

Paul Smith's kicked off to start the game, and on their first attack Derek Burns delivered a through ball to Marvis Nosa and Nosa put a shot past Hornet goalkeepeer Brett Roy (Newport, VT) and into the lower left corner of the net to give the Bobcats the very early advantage.  Paul Smith's kept the pressure on through much of the early going, but the Hornet defense and a couple of stellar saves by Roy kept it a 1-0 game heading into intermission.

The play was a bit more even through stretches of the second half.  While Lyndon was able to keep Paul Smith's from adding to their lead, they had little success challenging Bobcat keeper Steven Donnelly.  The Hornets nearly tied things in the 85th minute when Gilbert Flores (Winsted, CT) chipped a ball out of a scramble over Donnelly, but the ball bounced just over the top of the goal.  Paul Smith's was then able to hold on for the win.

Paul Smith's held the advantage in the play much of the afternoon, as they outshot the Hornets, 22-5, and held a 7-6 margin in corner kicks.  Roy made eight saves in the Hornet net while Donnelly was only called upon to make two stops for the Bobcats.

Lyndon returns to action next Saturday afternoon when they open North Atlantic Conference play against Thomas College.  Start time is 3:!5 pm.
