Northfield, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon volleyball team competed in the annual Vermont Volleyball Classic on Saturday afternoon. The annual event, hosted this year by Norwich University, saw the Hornets fall to Castleton University and host Norwich, both by 3-0 margins.
Castleton 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-11)
The Hornets were unable to overcome the Spartans in their first match of the day. Castleton jumped out to an early lead in all three sets, then cruised to the win. Jessica Trudeau led the Spartans with six kills and seven digs while setter Bre Macduff recorded 15 assists. Mary Weissauer (Milford, CT) posted five kills for Lyndon while Charlotte Morris (Middletown, DE) picked up 11 assists and Nyah Garner (Birmingham, AL) tallied six digs.
Norwich 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-6)
In the final match of the day the hosts used big runs to break open each set. A nine-point run put the first set away. Then in the second set, Norwich led 9-7 then scored 16 straight points to take the set. In the third set a pair of eight point runs closed out the match.
Kathryn Farnum had a big day for the Cadets, finishing with ten kills and seven digs. Sarah Farnum tallied 24 assists and Olivia Brown had a match high ten digs. Kersene Austinville (Federalsburg, MD) led the Hornets with seven kills. Morris had five assists and Calysta Lohman (Seward, AK) added four digs.
Lyndon returns to action next weekend at the Babson College Tournament. The Hornets will play at UMass-Boston on Friday evening at 6:00 pm, before facing Hamilton College and host Babson on Saturday afternoon.
