Boston, MA - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon volleyball team opened play in the Babson College Women's Volleyball Invitational Tournament on Friday evening. The Hornets played the University of Massachusetts Boston on their home court, with the host Beacons coming away with a straight set victory, 25-9, 25-4, 25-15.
UMass Boston's Taryn Broughal served six straight aces to start the match, and the Beacons never looked back in capturing the opening set. The second set was more of the same, as the hosts jumped out to a 15-1 lead and cruised to the set win.
The third set proved to be much more competitive. The Beacons and the Hornets alternated points in the early going, with Mary Weissauer's (Milford, CT) kill pulling the Hornets into an 8-8 tie. However, UMass Boston was able to gradually pull away from there to close out the three set victory.
UMass Boston dominated the service game, delivering 31 aces to only two for the Hornets. Toni Guerra led the Beacons with 10 aces. Emilia Czapiewska led the UMass Boston attack with four kills and Jill Francis recorded seven assists. Weissauer led the Hornets with three kills, with Charlotte Morris (Middletown, DE) recording six assists. UMass Boston's Kelsey Pereira had a match high six digs, while Nyah Garner (Birmingham, AL) and Mackenzie Rametta (Cleveland, OH) each had four digs for the Hornets.
Lyndon will play two more matches on Saturday, this time at tournament host Babson. The Hornets will take on Hamilton College at 1:00 pm and follow that up with a match against the hosts at 3:00 pm.
