Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont Lyndon women's soccer team opened up the 2021 season with a non-conference matchup against Fisher College on Saturday afternoon. Fisher's late goal pushed the Falcons past the Hornets, 3-2, and evened fisher's record at 1-1 on the season.
Fisher got on the scoreboard first in the 13th minute when Angel Hoye found Kelly Wallace and Wallace converted. The Hornets evened things lss than four minutes later when Felicity Flores (Winstead, CT) put Riann Fortin's (Derby, VT) cross into the back of the net. That would turn out to be the only scoring in the opening half, as the two teams headed into halftime deadlocked at 1-1.
Neither team was able to break through in the early going of the second half. In the 74th minute Wallace crossed the ball to Juliette Dominguez, who put it past Hornet goalkeeper Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) to again give the Falcons the advantage. Lyndon answered less than two minutes later when Fortin scored an unassisted goal. However, one minute after that Dominguez converted a nice two touch from Wallace and Kassie Lima for what would turn out to be the game winner. The Hornets nearly tied things in the 89th minute when Fortin's free kick hit the crossbar, but it bounced out and the Falcons held on for the win.
The Falcons outshot the Hornets, 27-13. Cordwell made ten saves in goal, while her Falcon counterpart, Ameilia Schaefer, made five stops.
The Hornets will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Paul Smith's College in another non-conference affair. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm on Varsity Field.
