Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon played Fisher College to a scoreless standoff for 66 minutes of Saturday afternoon's men's soccer game. Unfortunately for the home team, Fisher found the back of the net twice in the later stages of the second half and came away with a 2-0 victory to even their record at 1-1. The game was Lyndon's season opener.
Fisher had the better of the play in the opening half, outshooting the Hornets, 12-1. However Hornet goalkeeper Brett Roy (Newport, VT) made six saves, including a pair of acrobatic stops, to keep the Falcons off the board and keep the game scoreless going into halftime.
The Falcons continued to pressure the Hornets in the second stanza. In the 67th minute, Fisher's Juan Villalobos was able to volley a cross from Christian Millan past Roy for the first goal of the game. Just over three minutes later, Andres Caceres turned and fired a shot from just outside the box into the lower right corner of the goal to make it 2-0. That would turn out to be the final, as Fisher held off Lyndon the rest of the way.
The Falcons outshot the Hornets, 25-2, and held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Roy finished with ten saves, while his Fisher counterpart, Rafael Fabra, was only called on to make one save in posting the shutout and earning the win.
The Hornets will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon when they host Paul Smith's College. Kickoff on Varsity Field is scheduled for 3:15 pm.
