Cobleskill, NY - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and SUNY Cobleskill looked to be headed to overtime in Sunday's North Atlantic Conference men's soccer game. However, the Tigers were able to score off of a corner kick in the closing seconds of regulation and pick up a 2-1 win over the Hornets. Cobleskill improves to 2-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. Lyndon falls to 1-5 on the season and 0-4 in conference.
Cobleskill got on the scoreboard first in the 22nd minute when Jeremy Rossi headed in a deflected ball. The Hornets got the equalizer in the 36th minute, when Cobleskill goalkeeper John Gergen lost control of the ball in front of the net and Nick Trapp (Carmel, NY) poked it in the net.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the final seconds. With two seconds left, the Tigers' Ben Kessler delivered a corner kick. Cater Ciavardoni headed the corner into the far side of the net with just 0.6 seconds on the clock, giving Cobleskill the win.
Cobleskill outshot Lyndon, 43-8, and held an 11-4 advantage in corners. Hornet goalkeeper made a career high 15 saves to keep the Hornets in the contest. Gergen stopped three of four Hornet shots on goal in the first half. Wyatt Reed relieved Gergen at halftime and earned the win despite not facing a shot on goal.
The Hornets will travel to Rivier University for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
