Lyndonville, VT - Maine Maritime Academy scored four times in the first half of Saturday's men's soccer game to spoil Homecoming & Family Weekend at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon. The Hornets were unable to rally, as the Mariners came away with a 4-1 North Atlantic Conference victory. Maine Maritime improves to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the NAC. Lyndon falls to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Maine Maritime's Branden Pasternak got the Mariners on the board less than three minutes into the game when he put a free kick cross from Xander Fortuna-Ramon past Hornet goalkeeper Brett Roy (Newport, VT). The Hornets pulled even in the 11th minute when Joseph Patrick Osborn (Norwich, VT) bent a shot up and over Mariner keeper Trevor Gray and into the upper right corner of the net. Robert Wood (St. Johnsbury, VT) was credited with an assist on the goal.
Pasternak put the Mariners back in front just over a minute later when he ran onto a through ball behind the Hornet defense and blasted a shot into the top corner of the net. Maine Maritime made it 3-1 in the 21st minute when Pasternak's through ball found Reuben Harrison and Harrison converted. In the 41st minute the Mariners capitalized on a Hornet giveaway at midfield and scored when Pasternak found Brad McKechnie, who slipped the ball past Roy. That would prove to be the final goal of the game as the two teams played to a scoreless second half.
MMA outshot Lyndon, 20-5, and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Roy finished with six saves in ten shots on goal, while Gray stopped one of two shots on goal.
The Hornets will go on the road for the first time next Saturday when they travel to SUNY Delhi for a NAC crossover contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
