Box Score 2 Presque Isle, ME - For the second day in a row Northern Vermont University-Lyndon couldn't slow down the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The host Owls pounded out 31 hits in sweeping Sunday morning's North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader. The Owls improve to 13-7 on the season and 12-4 in NAC play. The Hornets fall to 2-14 overall and 2-10 in the NAC.
Game 1 - UMaine-Presque Isle 14, NVU-Lyndon 3
A big second inning proved to be the Hornets' undoing in the opener. After Marin Fowler (Plainfield, VT) had tied the game at 3-3 with a bases clearing triple in the top of the second inning, the hosts responded by sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring nine runs in the bottom half of the inning. Dalaney Anfinson keyed the Owl rally with two doubles and three runs batted in in the inning.
Anaiz Diaz also had a big game at the plate for UMPI. She had three hits, two runs batted in, and two runs scored. Jordan Hansen and Delanie Strout also had two hits for the Owls, who had 13 hits in the game. Other than Fowler's triple, Victoria Valentine (East Burke, VT) and Jaydan Allinson (Miami, AZ) were the only other Hornets to hit safely.
Marissa Valdivia went the distance, allowing three hits and striking out four to pick up the win for UMPI. Allinson took the loss for the Hornets.
Game 2 - UMaine-Presque Isle 16, NVU-Lyndon 0
The Owls scored in every inning while the Hornets couldn't get anything going on offense. Hansen had a huge game at the top of the UMPI lineup, delivering three hits, four runs batted in, and three runs scored. Strout also had three of UMPI's 18 hits and scored three times. Meanwhile the Hornets didn't have a base runner until Danielle Robinson's (Strafford, VT) single with one out in the fourth inning. Ashley Hart (Hampton, NH) and Fowler had fifth inning singles for the Hornets.
Olivia Riitano earned the shutout victory for the Owls. She struck out four without walking a batter. Gracie Ducker (Lyndonville, VT) pitched for Lyndon and suffered the loss.
The Hornets will play at home for the first time on Wednesday. Northern Vermont University-Johnson will visit the Skip Pound Softball Complex for a NAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
