Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

First half blitz carries UMPI past Hornet men

Presque Isle, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle scored six times in the opening half and went on to record a 6-0 North Atlantic Conference men's soccer victory over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Owls improve to 2-12 on the season and 2-7 in NAC play.  The Hornets fall to 1-14 and finish winless in nine NAC contests.

Gavin Vining got UMPI on the board less than four minutes into the game with an unassisted goal following a scramble in front of the Hornet net.  Stephen Cochrane made it 2-0 in the 13th minute when he took a pass from Diego Vega and converted.  Just over three minutes later, Vega's unassisted tally made it 3-0.  Vega scored three more times in the first half, as the Owls put the game away early.

The second half was played on more even terms, but neither team was able to score.  UMPI outshot Lyndon, 27-11, for the game but the Hornets held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.  Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) had three of Lyndon's seven shots on goal.  Gilbert Flores (Winstead, CT) added a pair of shots on goal.  Hornet goalkeeper Brett Roy (Newport, VT) stopped 10 of 16 UMPI shots on goal.  Owl starting keeper Keith Mank stopped six shots before being relieved by Kobe West, who recorded one save to preserve the shutout.

The Hornets will close out the season with a non-conference match at Plymouth State University on Tuesday afternoon.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
