Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's soccer team closed out the home portion of the 2021 season with a non-conference matchup against New England College on Varsity Field on Wednesday afternoon. After a scoreless first half, NEC's Sophia Gomez-Pedreira found the back of the net in the 57th minute and the Pilgrims made it stand up for a 1-0 victory. NEC improves to 5-9 on the season, while Lyndon falls to 2-12.
Lyndon adopted a defensive posture for much of the first half, while NEC played the possession game. The Pilgrims were able to produce six shots in the half, while the Hornets didn't have a shot. However Lyndon goalkeeper Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) stopped all three of the shots on goal that she faced, and the two teams headed into halftime scoreless.
The early minutes of the second half resembled the first, with NEC controlling the ball and Lyndon defending. In the 57th minute, NEC's Leeeann Demirjian crossed a ball from the right corner through the box that slipped past Cordwell. Gomez-Pedreira was waiting on the back side to poke the ball in the open net for what would prove to be the only goal of the game.
NEC continued to control play the rest of the way, as Lyndon only generated two shots. The Pilgrims outshot the Hornets, 16-2, after intermission for a 22-2 advantage in the game. NEC also had ten corner kicks to Lyndon's four. Cordwell finished with eight saves, while the Pilgrims' Emily Sashko picked up the shutout and the win without having to make a save.
The Hornets will close out the season on Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 pm North Atlantic Conference matchup at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
