Hornet women shut out by UMaine-Presque Isle in season finale

Presque Isle, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's soccer team closed out the 2021 campaign with a road game at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday afternoon.  The host Owls scored four times in the first 30 minutes and never looked back, cruising to a 7-0 North Atlantic Conference win.  UMPI improves to 7-6 on the season and 5-4 in NAC play, while Lyndon closes the season at 2-13 and 0-8 in conference.

Alexis Ireland got UMPI on the scoreboard in the 9th minute, when she scored with an assist from Rhylee Kinney.  Ireland found the net again in the 20th minute, this time with an assist from Ashlyn Wing, to make it 2-0.  Hannah Rossignol added a pair of goals less than two minutes apart later in the half to make the score 4-0, Owls, at halftime.

UMPI continued to control play in the second half.  Rossignol completed her hat trick with a goal in the 67th minute, then Ireland matched the hat trick in the 74th minute.  Zhoreen Malik's unassisted goal in the 86th minute completed the scoring.

The Owls outshot the Hornets, 22-5, and were awarded six corner kicks to none for Lyndon.  Freshman Alyssa Fryman (Lancaster, NH) had three of Lyndon's five shots.  Hornet goalkeeper Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) stopped seven of 14 Owl shots on goal, while UMPI keeper Savannah Rodriguez picked up the shutout and the win while making four saves.

The Hornets complete the season with an eye to the future.  The as many as 15 players, including nine freshmen, on this year's roster are expected to return in 2022.
