Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon opened North Atlantic Conference volleyball play with a pair of home matches on Saturday. The Hornets fell to both Maine Maritime Academy and Husson University, both by 3-0 margins. MMA improved to 6-6 on the season, while Husson moved to 3-11 on the season and 1-2 in the NAC. The Hornets are winless in 13 outings.
Maine Maritime 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-14)
The Mariners cruised to wins in the first two sets, then pulled away in the third set, closing with an 11-1 run, to clinch the match. Rachel Melampy led the MMA attack with ten kills and seven aces. Katie Albritton recorded 19 assists and Sydney Rich finished with seven digs. Calysta Lohman (Seward, AK) had four kills for Lyndon. Charlotte Morris (Middletown, DE) posted six assists while Lohman and Kiana Jones (Wilbraham, MA) had five digs apiece.
The Hornets were undone in part by their own miscues. Lyndon committed 46 total errors in the match, compared to 17 for MMA.
Husson 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-17)
The Hornets were more competitive in the day's second match. Lyndon jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the opening set but the Eagles rallied to forge a 5-5 tie. After some back and forth play, the Eagles held a 12-10 lead and proceeded to run off four straight points to pad their margin and cruise from there. Set two was tied at 12-12 when Husson ran off five straight points to get some breathing room. And nine straight Eagle points in set three broke open what was a 10-10 tie.
Julia Leavitt led Husson with 11 kills. Alyvia McIntyre and Cat Torres recorded 12 and 10 assists respectively while Adrienne Beatty finished with nine digs. Jones had a strong game for the Hornets. She totaled ten kills and a pair of blocks. Morris had a match high 13 assists and Lohman posted seven digs and four kills.
The Hornets will travel to Northern Vermont University-Johnson on Wednesday for another NAC matchup. Game time is 4:00 pm.
