Farmington, ME - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon took an early lead in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference women's soccer game at the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets were unable to maintain their advantage, however, as the hosts responded with five unanswered goals to emerge with a 5-1 victory. UMF improved to 2-8 on the season and 2-2 in the NAC, while Lyndon falls to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in conference.
The Hornets took the early lead when Alyssa Fryman (Lancaster, NH) put a shot into the lower left corner of the net past UMF goalkeeper Callie Hammer. The lead would be short lived, however, as the Beavers' Audrey Fletcher tied things under two minute later with an unassisted goal. In the 26th minute UMF's McKenna Brodeur found Emily Larochelle and Larochelle converted to make it 2-1, Beavers. That's how things stayed going into halftime.
UMF put the game away with three more goals in the second half. Brodeur scored twice in succession in the 50th and 51st minutes. Kiley Merritt then added an insurance goal in the 77th minute to account for the final score.
UMF outshot Lyndon, 38-4, and held a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks. Hammer earned the win for the Beavers, stopping one of the two shots she faced before giving way to Lily Souza. Hornet keeper Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) had a big game in goal. She finished with a career high 23 saves, tied for the second highest since the program returned to NCAA Division III play.
The Hornets return home tomorrow for a 1:00 pm North Atlantic Conference matchup against Maine Maritime Academy.
