Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Maine Maritime scores late to defeat Hornet women

Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and Maine Maritime Academy battled to a scoreless standoff through the first 74 minutes of Sunday's rainy and wet North Atlantic Conference women's soccer game.  The visiting Mariners were able to break through in the 75th minute, and went on to defeat the Hornets, 2-0.  Maine Maritime improves to 5-3 on the season and 4-0 in NAC play, while Lyndon remains winless in seven starts, including four in conference.

Hornet goalkeeper Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) came up big several times to keep Lyndon even.  She finished with 11 saves, while her Mariner counterpart, Bess MacArthur, was only called on to make one stop.

In the 75th minute, Lyndon was called for a foul just outside of the box.  Maine Maritime's Mackenzie Carter took the free kick and bent it past the Hornet wall and into the lower left corner of the net.

Almost six minutes later the Mariners opened up a little breathing room when Carter took a through ball from Aleya Pelletier and beat Cordwell, making it 2-0.  That's the way it would end, as Lyndon was unable to mount a final charge to get back even.

The Hornets will return to action on Wednesday afternoon, when they host Northern Vermont University-Johnson.  Kickoff on Varsity Field is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
