Lyndonville, VT - Mitchell College scored once in each half enroute to a non-conference women's soccer win over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Wednesday afternoon. The Mariners improved to 4-6-1 with the win, while the Hornets fell to 1-10.
The first half was played on relatively even terms, with the Hornets holding a slim 6-5 advantage in shots. However, it was the Mariners who were the team that was able to get on the scoreboard. In the 24th minute, Hornet goalkeeper Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) denied Mitchell's Ileana Perez from in front, but Mariah Travisano lofted the rebound over Cordwell and into the net to give the Mariners the lead. Lyndon's Ashley Hart (Hampton, NH) and Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) both had great opportunities to tie the game later in the half, but both just missed the mark.
Mitchell clung to the one-goal lead until the 84th minute, when Francesca Zamarripa redirected Jessica Krupnikoff's long ball to Rachel Ricciuti and Ricniutti knocked it in the open net to give the Mariners an insurance goal. The Mariners were able to hold off the Hornets the rest of the way and come away with the win.
The Mariners outshot the Hornets, 11-5, in the second half and 16-11 for the game. Corner kicks were few, as Lyndon only had a pair and Mitchell only had one. Cordwell stopped nine of 11 shots on goal, while Mitchell keeper stopped all three Hornet shots on goal to preserve the shutout and pick up the win.
The Hornets get back into North Atlantic Conference play this weekend when they travel to Husson University on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 2:30 pm.
