Hornet men's soccer shutout by Rivier

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's soccer team was unable to muster any offense in Friday's 4-0 non-conference defeat at the hands of Rivier University.  The loss drops the Hornets to 0-4-1 on the season, while the Raiders picked up their first win to improve to 1-2-1 on the season.

The two teams played primarily in the midfield for most of the opening half, with neither team generating many threats.  Rivier's Fred Kazalski finally broke through in the 37th minute when he split a pair of Hornet defenders and put a shot past Hornet goalkeeper Caleb Derbyshire (Barton, VT) and into the upper right corner of the net.  That would be the only score of the opening half.

Rivier made it 2-0 in the 54th minute when Kazalski took a pass from James Digiovanni and converted.  Kalvin Cortes later scored twice 20 seconds apart in the 71st minute, first on a penalty kick and then on an unassisted goal, to account for the final margin.

Rivier outshot Lyndon 19-0 for the contest and possessed the bal for 54% of the contest.  Raider keepers Collin Dayarmin and Cody Richards combined for the clean sheet without facing a shot, while Derbyshire made six stops in the Hornet net.

The Hornets return to action on Sunday at noon when they host Bryant & Stratton College of Albany on Varsity Field.
