Hornets drop first two games of four game set to UMPI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Milford, NH - Lyndon State College and the University of Maine at Presque Isle women's softball teams will play each other four times in less than 24 hours.  Tonight the series at the Hampshire Dome did not get off to a good start for the Hornets, as the Owls swept two games, 16-0 and 21-1.  Lyndon remains winless in ten games this season, while UMPI improves to 18-8 on the season.

Game 1 - Maine-Presque Isle 16, Lyndon 0

The Owls used a 12-run third inning to take command of the game, and the Hornets never mounted a threat after that.  Anaiz Diaz (Tampa, FL) was the hitting star for the Owls, as she went three for four at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in three more.  Brianna Losee (Pittsfield, ME) also went three for four with a pair of rbis.

The Hornets only mustered four hits against UMPI starter Sara Packard (St. Albans, ME) and reliever Brookelynn Garcia (Torrance, CA).  Packard picked up the win while striking out ten and only allowing three hits over the first four innings.  Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, NH) went the distance and took the loss for Lyndon.  Only five of the 16 runs allowed by DeWitt were earned, as the Hornets hurt themselves by committing seven errors.

Game 2 - Maine-Presque Isle 21, Lyndon 1

The nightcap didn't start out any better for Lyndon, as UMPI pounded out nine runs and ten hits in the top of the first inning.  The Owls built a 16-0 lead before Lyndon finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning when Hannah Choiniere (Highgate, VT) delivered a one-out triple and came in to score on Cassie Black's (Tolland, CT) ground out.  Jordi Legassie (Presque Isle, ME) was a perfect three for three at the plate for the Owls.  Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA) was also three for three while Emily Page (Lincoln, ME) drove in five runs.

Packard also picked up the win in the nightcap, as she yielded only three hits in four innings while striking out four.  Amber Roberts (Berlin, NH) took the loss for Lyndon.

The same two teams will meet for another doubleheader tomorrow morning at 10:00 am at the Hampshire Dome.
