Box Score 2 New London, CT – The Lyndon State College softball team took to the field for the first time this season on Saturday, traveling to Mitchell College for a doubleheader. Unfortunately for the Hornets, the host Mariners swept the twinbill, taking game one, 25-1, and game two, 10-2. Mitchell improved to 2-6 with the wins.
The Mariners pounded out 35 runs on 28 hits in the doubleheader. Taylor Duchesneau (Killingly, CT) went 4-for-6 with six RBI, two homers, a double and five runs scored on the day. She also picked up her first win of the season inside the circle. Hannah Choiniere (Highgate, VT) and Charlotte Winslow (Pittsford, VT) each had two hits on the day for the Hornets.
Game 1 – Mitchell 25, Lyndon 1 (5 innings)
Mitchell scored nine runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Mariners then sent 17 batters to the plate in the second inning and pushed across 14 more runs to go up 23-0.
Duchesneau supplied an RBI double and a two-run homer in the second inning before adding the solo shot in the third. In the circle, she allowed only one run on five hits while striking out six over 5.0 innings of work.
Samantha DelConte (Enfield, CT), Stephanie Adams (White Plains, MD) and Danielle Autieri (North Salem, NY) each finished with a pair of doubles for the Mariners. Autieri and Suzanne Vachon (East Hartford, CT) also knocked in four runs apiece.
Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, VT) accounted for the lone Lyndon run with a solo homer in the fourth inning.
Game 2 – Mitchell 10, Lyndon 2 (5 innings)
The Mariners jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings in the nightcap. Vachon and Adams provided back-to-back RBI triples in the first inning to put Mitchell on the scoreboard, and Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey (Peabody, MA) added to the margin with an RBI double. She later scored on wild pitch to make it 5-0.
Megan Elphick (Waterford, CT) capped a three-run second inning with an RBI double of her own. The Hornets got a run back in the third on a two-out RBI single by Hannah Choiniere (Highgate, VT). After the Mariners scored a pair in the home half on RBI singles by Vachon and Duchesneau, Lyndon pushed across another run in the fourth on a single to left field by Cassie Black (Tolland, CT).
Mitchell starter Shyla Phillips-Krick (Griswold, CT) earned the victory, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four over 5.0 innings.
The Hornets will travel to Fisher College gor a doubleheader next Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 am. Mitchell will host Pine Manor College on Wednesday.
