Hornet men fall to Green Mountain in overtime on Senior Day

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's soccer team outshot Green Mountain College 32-12 on Saturday afternoon.  Unfortunately for the Hornets, they were only able to turn that advantage into a single goal, and the result was a 2-1 overtime defeat at the hands of the Eagles.  Lyndon is now 1-10 on the season while Green Mountain improves to 3-7-1.

Lyndon scored first in the 11th minute.  Nolan Matthews (Massaapequa, NY) served a ball up the left side that Hunter Torrey (Newbury, VT) ran onto and fired past Green Mountain goalkeeper Sawyer Levy for his sixth goal of the season.

Green Mountain picked up the equalizer in the 26th minute when Joe Grubb headed in Robert Buttrick's corner kick.  The Hornets got the better of play after that, but neither team was able to break through again and the halftime score remained 1-1.

Green Mountain had a chance to take the lead five minutes into the second half, but Patrick Hartigan's shot hit the crossbar.  Then in the 69th minute the Hornets had a golden opportunity to move back in front.  Green Mountain was called for a foul in the box, giving Lyndon's Abukar Hassan (South Burlington, VT) a penalty kick.  However Levy was able to block Hassan's shot, as well as a rebound attempt from Sam Ognenoff (Brattleboro, VT), and the threat was thwarted.  Lyndon had another great scoring chance in the 79th minute, but Matthews hit the crossbar.  The two teams then headed to overtime tied.

Lyndon had the best scoring opportunity of the first extra session late in the period when after a scramble Noah Sanville-Perry (Thetford, VT) wound up with the ball right in front of the goal.  However his shot missed right and the teams headed to a second overtime.

Lyndon was called for a foul just outside the box midway through the second extra period.  Grubb took the direct kick and was able to hook the ball over the wall, past Hornet keeper Dennis Farnham III (Orono, ME), and into the lower left corner of the net to give the Eagles the win.

The Hornets came up short despite having much the better of the play throughout.  Besides the 32-12 shot advantage Lyndon also held a 14-3 advantage in corners.  Levy made nine saves for Green Mountain and picked up the win.  Caleb Derbyshire (Barton, VT) played the opening half in goal for Lyndon before giving way to Farnham.  Each keeper only made one save, with Farnham taking the loss.

Prior to the contest the Hornets recognized their senior student athletes, who were joined by family and friends on the field.  Those recognized include Kevin Love (Bristol, CT), William Martin (Sherborn, MA), Mukhtar Abdullahi (Mogadishu, Somalia), Jacob Nelson (Guildhall, VT), Matthews, Torrey, and Hassan.

The Hornets return to North Atlantic Conference play next Saturday when they travel to SUNY Canton.  Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm.
