Box Score 2 HENNIKER, N.H. – The Lyndon State College softball team opened up North Atlantic Conference play Friday afternoon at New England College, falling in the opener 12-4 and game two 16-5.
Game 1
Shelby Sheridan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) led the Hornets at the plate going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, N.H.) went a solid 2-for-2 at bat with a run and an RBI.
Alexa Scribner finished with two hits, two runs, and two RBIs to lead the Pilgrims. Gabriella Marcheschi recorded two hits, three RBIs, and one run while Jessica Carroll went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
The Hornets jumped out early with two runs in the top of the first inning as Brooke Dolloff (Rumford, Maine) put the ball in play, scoring Sheridan as the Pilgrims were unable to secure an out. DeWitt then scored on a Pilgrim error.
The Pilgrims answered with an eight-run rally in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding lead. The hosts tacked on another run in the second on a home run from Carroll.
Lyndon added two more runs in the third inning as Ashlynn Royce (Danville, Vt.) scored on a single from Sheridan before Sheridan scored on a single from DeWitt.
NEC picked up two run in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth while holding the Hornets scoreless in the fourth and fifth to take the game 12-4.
Game 2
DeWitt had another strong game going 2-for-3 with one RBI for Lyndon. Dolloff added a hit, a run, and an RBI.
Christine McNeil registered five RBIs on two hits while scoring two runs to lead the Pilgrims.
The Pilgrims powered out 16 runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump out in the lead.
The Hornets answered with three in the top of the third as Royce smashed a double to right to plate Erica Hayakawa (Japan). Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, Vt.) crossed the plate on an RBI ground out from Sheridan. DeWitt then singled to center field to bring home Royce to bring the score to 16-3.
Lyndon continued to keep NEC scoreless and added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a double from Dolloff and a single from Makayla Epps (Foxboro, Mass.) but were unable to catch the Pilgrims.
The Hornets (0-6, 0-2 NAC) host UMaine-Presque Isle Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
The Pilgrims (8-14, 3-1 NAC) host Johnson State Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
