Mariners Disappoint Hornets in Season Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW LONDON, Conn. – After multiple postponements, the Lyndon State College softball team finally opened up their 2017 season at Mitchell College.  The Hornets dropped both contests of the doubleheader, 16-3 and 8-0, in five innings.

Game 1

Brooke Dolloff and Hannah Choiniere smacked two hits each to lead the Hornets, with Choiniere also scoring a run and stealing a base.  Kiya DeWitt recorded one hit, one run, one RBI, and one stolen base while also pitching three innings in the loss.

Samantha DelConte led the Mariners going 4-for-4 from the plate while scoring four runs and coming up just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.  Megan Elphick added two hits, four runs, and two RBIs.  Taylor Duchesneau earned the win in the circle throwing all five innings while allowing two earned runs on six hits.

Mitchell picked up an early lead as they posted five runs in the bottom of the first inning.  The Mariners added two more runs in the second inning before the Hornets rallied for three runs in the top of the third.  Unfortunately, the Hornets were unable to plate anymore runs in the fourth and fifth innings as the Mariners rolled to a 16-3 victory.

Game 2

Choiniere picked up the lone hit of the game for the Hornets to finish with three hits on the afternoon.  Ashlynn Royce received the loss pitching 3.2 innings.

Suzanne Vachon went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs and two RBIs to lead the Mariners.  Italia Krick and Samantha DelConte added two hits.  Duchesneau threw another four innings to pick up her fourth win of the season.

Again, Mitchell got on top in the first inning as they plated two runs.  After a scoreless second inning, the Mariners scored another run in the bottom of the third for the 3-0 lead.  The Hornets recorded their only hit of the game in the fourth inning, with Choiniere then advancing to second on a throwing error.  The Hornets were unable to bring Choiniere in as the Mariners then put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking the second game 8-0.

The Hornets (0-2) travel to SUNY Canton on Wednesday, April 5 for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.

The Mariners (5-6) host Lesley for a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
