Early goals pace Thomas past Hornet men

Box Score

Waterville, ME - Thomas College scored twice in the first eight minutes and went on to defeat Lyndon State College, 8-2, on Saturday afternoon.  The Terriers improve to 7-7-1 and 5-1-1 in North Atlantic Conference play, while the Hornets fall to 5-7-1 and 1-6-1 in the NAC.

With the game less than three minutes old, the Terriers' Jack Gallagher (Camden, ME) one-touched a pass from Tevin Reid (Dorchester, MA) into the center of the net.  Thomas made it 2-0 less than five minutes later when Reid beat a Hornet defender and found the right side of the net from 12 yards away.

Lyndon's Nate Kolash (Dubois, PA) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 26th minute his free kick from 35 yards away deflected off Thomas goalkeeper Jonahan Dutka (Durham, NH) and into the right side of the goal.  It was Kolash's second goal of the season.

The Terriers regained a two-goal advantage in the 37th minute.  Hornet goalkeeper stopped an initial shot by Princiel Kunieki (Portland, ME), and a rebound attempt by Zenawi Bowen (St. George, Bermuda), but Baramee Janla (Winter Harbor, ME) put the second rebound into the right side of the net to make it 3-1.

Thomas added one more goal before the half, as Bowen took a through ball from Nawfal El-Antri (Dorchester, MA) and fired a shot from 15 yards out into the right side of the net.  The Terriers took the 4-1 lead into the halftime break.

The pace slowed early in the second half, as neither team generated many scoring opportunities for the first 27 minutes.  That changed in the 72nd minute, as the Terriers' Josh Emard (Lebanon, ME) fired a shot from 35 yards out into the left side of the net.

Thomas tacked on two goals from Tyler Fletcher (Monmouth, ME).  In the 82nd minute Fletcher headed home a cross from Janala.  Five minutes later Fletcher headed home a John Flores-McKenna (Rockville Center, NY) corner kick to make it 7-1 Thomas.

Lyndon's Devin Cowan (Saranac Lake, NY) got one goal back in the 89th minute, when he stole the ball from Thomas goalkeeper John Villanueva (Gray, ME) and put it into the empty net.

Fletcher picked up his third goal of the final eight minutes when his volley of a Flores-McKenna cross found the right side of the net in the final minute.

Thomas dominated the play throughout, holding a 31-3 shot advantage, with 19 shots on goal.  LaClair made 11 saves in the Hornet net.  Lyndon's only two shots on goal found the net.

The Hornets return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to Plymouth State University for a 3:00 pm non-conference matchup.  They close the season with a Senior Day home contest against Johnson State College next Saturday at 3:30 pm.  Thomas travels to Colby-Sawyer College next Saturday.
