Badgers sneak by Hornets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JOHNSON, Vt. – The Lyndon State College softball team suffered two narrow losses to Johnson State College, 3-1 and 5-4, Tuesday evening at Minaert Field.

Game 1

Lyndon wasted no time securing the lead with a single run in the top of the first when Julia Kearney (Medford, Mass.) singled to bring Shelby Sheridan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) home.

Both teams kept each other scoreless over the next two innings until Anna Bingham doubled to left field, bringing Alex Bean home to tie up the ball game 1-1.  The next at bat, Shannon Grier followed with an RBI off of a sac fly to centerfield, which brought Andrea Williams home to put the Badgers on top, 2-1.  The Badgers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth as Grier sent one over the fence.

Williams registered the complete-game win for Johnson giving up three hits and allowing one run.  Sheridan took the loss for the Hornets allowing six hits and three runs.

Game 2

The second game started much like the first with Sheridan scoring a run in the top of the first off a single from Kearney.  However, the Badgers evened up the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Kaitlynn Woodward.

Grier knocked another solo shot in the third to give the Badgers a 2-1 lead but the Hornets came roaring back with three runs in the top of the fourth.  Lily Stinehour (Lunenberg, Vt.) doubled to bring in Sheridan from second base.  Then just two batters later, Brooke Dolloff (Rumford, Maine) roped a triple to plate Stinehour and Kearney, taking a 4-2 lead.

The Badgers picked up two runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot up the score at 4-4.  The Hornets were unable to answer in the sixth and seventh innings.  Johnson would take advantage and plate a run in the bottom of the seventh to take the game 5-4.

The Hornets (2-18, 0-6 NAC) will be hosted by Norwich Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader.

The Badgers (5-13, 3-3 NAC) travel to Maine-Farmington on Saturday.
