Lyndon splits season finale at Johnson

JOHNSON, Vt. – Lyndon closed out its 2015 season Friday with a doubleheader split with Johnson State. The Hornets won the opener by a score of 8-1 n and dropped the nightcap by a slim margin of 6-5.

In Game 1, Lyndon plated two runs in the first inning on a Badger error and a run-scoring single by Katie Davis (North Haverhill, N.H.). After Johnson starter Andrea Williams cut the deficit to one run with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, the Hornets took command of the game with a four-run spurt in the top of the fifth.

Jillian Emery (Johnson, Vt.) and Mindy Carl (Newport, Vt.) singled home one run each before Katie Ste. Marie (NOrth Troy, Vt.) sent another home by scorching a double down the left field line. Brooke Dolloff's (Rumford, Maine) RBI single would close out the scoring in the frame and give Lyndon a comfortable lead.

The Hornets closed out the scoring in the contest in the six as Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, N.H.) scored Shelby Sheridan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) with a ground out and Davis came through with her second run-scoring single of the day.

Davis went the distance to get the win allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out six and walking one. DeWitt and Emery had three hits each while Dolloff, Davis and Taylor Young (Lowell, Mass.) added two each.

Williams went seven innings in taking the loss. She allowed six earned runs on 15 hits while fanning six and walking none. Alex Bean had three hits to lead the Badgers.

In Game 2, Lyndon jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead once again as Sheridan and Young scored on a pair of wild pitches. In the bottom of the inning, The Hornets returned the favor as a pair of wild tosses knotted the score at 2-2.

Lyndon took as 4-2 lead in the top of the third on a RBI double by Davis, but Johnson, behind a run-scoring triple by Kristy McDonnell in the third and a RBI by Anna Bingham in the fourth, made up the difference and took a 6-4 lead.

DeWitt drove home Sheridan in the top of the seventh and the Hornets managed to get the tying run into scoring position, but Williams, who relieved McDonnell in the fifth, worked out of the jam to preserve the victory.

Williams went three innings to get the win allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out six and walking none. Bean had three hits for a second straight game while Hogan, McDonnell and Williams added two each.

Davis took the loss allowing six earned runs on 11 hits while fanning five and walking one. Young closed out her Lyndon career with three hits.

Lyndon finishes the 2015 season with an overall record of 10-20 and a mark of 3-9 in the North Atlantic Conference.
