Lyndon Takes Down Houghton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla.Katie Davis had yet another stellar game on Tuesday as she sat down 13 straight Houghton batters. Lyndon picked up their second victory of the season, winning 8-0 in five innings.

In game one Lyndon was beat by Alma College 3-0. Tori Maslan pitched her first-ever collegiate game, giving up just five hits and only three runs.

"She had an outstanding effort out there," said Lyndon Coach Greer Lemnah.  "Our defense really rallied behind her and she threw a five hitter in her first collegiate start, she was great."

Game two against Houghton College was a different story. In the first inning Jillian Emery brought in Taylor Young off a single to center field to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Lemnah spoke about what it meant to get an early lead.

"It's important to jump out to an early lead," she said. "We always say 'win the inning' and 'be aggressive on the base paths,' that was huge for us and we never stopped being aggressive."

Dakota Crane would triple in the fourth, bringing home Shelby Sheridan to put Lyndon up 4-0. Emma Kaplan would drive a ball to deep left field and bring in two runs to make it 6-0 in the third inning.

Jillian Emery would steal second base in the fourth inning and that allowed Crane to steal home as the Houghton catcher threw down to second base. That would be it for Lyndon, winning the game 8-0.

"It's nice to pick up another victory and we need to keep rolling," said Lemnah. Today was our best day so far and if we continue to improve we'll do great things."

Lyndon is now 2-4 during their spring training trip in Florida, both victories coming against Houghton. Lemnah spoke about the determination the players played with today.

"Our players come in and give their best effort everyday," she said. "I'm really proud of them."

The Hornets will have Wednesday. They hit the field again on Thursday when they play Augustana at 9:00 a.m. and Houghton at 11:00 a.m.
