Hornets fall in double overtime

Box Score

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Lyndon men's basketball team lost the 2015-16 season opener in dramatic fashion Tuesday night, falling to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in double overtime 96-95.

With MCLA up 96-93 in the second overtime, Alexis Ravelo's drive to the basket cut the lead to one with and about 43 seconds left in the extra period.  The Hornets would force an MCLA turnover with 9.7 seconds on the clock to gain possession of the ball for a chance to score.  Raymond Monroe found Gabriel Torres open outside the arc at the top of the key.  Torres let go of a shot was deflected by Dakari Hannah-Wornum before Hannah-Wornum collided with Torres as time expired.  The win pushes MCLA to 2-1 on the season as Lyndon drops to 0-1.

The block capped off an impressive night for Hannah-Wornum as he pulled down 18 rebounds to go with 14 points and seven blocks total.

The Hornets had chances at both the end of regulation and the first overtime to leave Amsler Campus Center with a win.  After a defensive stop, Hornets' head coach Chris Dorsey called a timeout to draw up a play.  Eric Vargas found an open Dawda Jallow whose layup bounced off the backboard and rim before getting knocked out of bounds to essentially end regulation.

In the first overtime, MCLA gained a 87-84 lead with a minute remaining.  With just 37 seconds left, Monroe drained a three from the corner to tie the game.  Lyndon made another stop but lost the ball out of bounds under the hoop as time expired.

A battle in the first half, the Hornets finished the stanza on a 10-2 run to take a 38-32 lead.  Lyndon pushed the lead to 14 in the beginning minutes of the second half before MCLA began to chip away.

MCLA took an eight-point lead with 4:30 left in regulation but couldn't hold on as two free throws from Monroe capped off a Lyndon 12-4 run to send the teams to overtime.

Xavier Colbert led the Hornets with 20 points and seven rebounds.  Ravelo and Torres finished with 17 points each.  Monroe chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds.

MCLA's Joe Wiggins led all scorers with 21 points while Khalil Paul and Careem Kirksey added 16 apiece.

Lyndon travels to play Wesleyan (Conn.) Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in the Herb Kenny Tip-Off Tournament.
