Hornets come up short against Cadets

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Lyndon State College men's soccer team fell short in a 1-0 loss to Norwich University in non-conference action on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium on Tuesday night.

Junior forward Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) stayed hot, tallying his second goal in as many games to provide the difference in the match.

Zimmerman headed home a crossing pass from Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) in the 23rd minute for his sixth goal of the season to spark the Norwich offense to the win.

The Cadets nearly pushed the lead to 2-0 with seven minutes to go in the half with a flurry of three chances that the Lyndon State defense stood tall on. Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, N.Y.) made two great saves, one on Zimmerman and then another Schiers and then a third save was deflected back off the goal line by a Hornet defender from Schiers.

Liam Kelleher (Manchester, Vt.) nearly tied the game up for the Hornets with a great attempt on a quick turnaround left-footed shot from the top of the penalty box. However, NU freshman goalkeeper Stefan Skoff (San Jose, Calif.) made a terrific leaping save to deflect the ball away from the top left corner of the net.

Skoff made three other saves to pick up his third shutout of the season.

Norwich outshot Lyndon State 23-6 in the game, but was only able to solve the Lyndon State goalkeeper tandem of Matt LaClair and Jason Pelkey (Barre, Vt.) once. Pelkey relieved LaClair for the second half, each finishing with four saves.

The Hornets (1-8, 0-3 NAC) hosts Colby-Sawyer Saturday at 3:30pm.
