Hornets edged in finale

Box Score

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - Johnson State visited Lyndon Saturday and the Badgers defeated the Hornets 1-0 on Senior Day. Lyndon said good bye to senior goalie Jason Marks (Newtown,Conn.) and senior midfielder Eric Nelson(Guildhall,Vt.) in a ceremony before the game.

The match was a tightly-contested affair as the lone goal was scored by Sean Springer with 24:40 left of the first half. Springer intercepted a bad clearing pass by the Lyndon defense and beat Marks low to the right side of the net.

"It is going to be hard replacing Marks next year," said head coach Pete Kellaway. "He was one of those players that never hesitated to voice his opinions. He and Nellie were the true back bones to our very young team."

The second half was a very physical battle as both teams committed most all of their fouls. In the final minutes of the game, Lyndon's Devin Cowan(Gavrieos,N.Y.) and Johnson's Matt Boltzer received red cards and were ejected from the game. The dismissal was the result of both players getting into a pushing match.

"I was disappointed of the result of the game but the future is bright for us," said Kellaway. "When you have seven freshmen starting and the team is able to compete it means something and that something will be displayed for the next three years. All of the freshmen that started have improved so much in one season. I can't wait to see what they are like next year and the years after."

The Hornets finished their season with an overall record of 6-11 and a mark of 2-7 in the North Atlantic Conference. Johnson fished 5-10-1 and 3-7 in NAC play.
