Box Score CANTON, N.Y. – Nick Escalante tallied two goals and an assist, while Devin Gruneisen found the back of the net once as the SUNY Canton men's soccer team defeated visiting Lyndon 4-1 Sunday afternoon.
The win propels the Kangaroos to 9-9-0 as they are now eligible for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament. The Hornets finish their season 1-14-1.
The hosts wasted no time getting on the board just 53 seconds in when Escalante took the ball down the left side and played a beautiful cross into the box where Gruneisen stood at the right post and headed the ball into the lower right corner past Hornet keeper Jason Marks (Newtown, Conn.). Early on in the 16th minute the duo swapped roles as Gruneisen set up Escalante with a quick pass as he finished into the lower left corner.
Just less than 20 minutes later Escalante tallied another marker, his 15th goal of the season, off a pass from Hunter Mowery as the Roos opened up a 3-0 lead. Lyndon State got the deficit within two with just less than three minutes left in the half. Chris Wilkins (Heath, Mass.) crossed the ball to Colin Brady (Springfield, Mass.) who took a shot from a sharp angle on the left side and beat Roo keeper Evan Drew into the right corner as he dove to his left.
SUNY Canton held a 12-2 edge in shots and 6-1 shots on goal mark to take a 3-1 lead into intermission.
The Roos would add an additional insurance marker in the 72nd minute when Mowery fed a through ball to Abdulai Jagana who evaded Marks coming off his line and placed the ball into the open net. SUNY Canton held a large edge in shots (26-3), shots on goal (16-2) and corner kicks (6-0) in the contest.
Drew stopped one shot in net for SUNY Canton and Jamie Stevens replaced him the final 16:31 in goal. Marks had a strong performance stopping 12 shots on the day for the Hornets. This concludes the 2013 regular season for both teams.
