Box Score LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Trailing 2-0 late in
the second half, Lyndon scored two goals in a 40- second span
Wednesday to earn a 2-2 with Norwich University in men's
non-conference soccer action.
With 6:33 left to play, Hornets midfielder Phil Curll (Camden,
Maine) scored off a direct kick from 25 meters out to slash the
Cadet advantage to one goal. Lyndon managed to regain possession of
the ball off the ensuing kick-off and pushed the ball up the middle
of the field to striker Teague Coyle (Northfield, N.H.) who
unleashed a shot on goal from just outside the penalty area.
Norwich goalkeeper Alex Toomey managed to get a hand on the ball
and knocked it down toward the goal line. However, in a desperate
attempt to keep the ball from rolling slowly into the net, the
Toomey tipped the shot onto the waiting foot of Richie Hackett
(Barton, Vt.), who punched home the rebound to tie the score with
5:53 left to play.
Lyndon continued to pour on the pressure, but Norwich proved
equal to the task, sending the game into tow 10-minute overtime
periods. Lyndon had a chance to win the game midway through the
second overtime session, but Tyler Bullard's shot from seven
meters out cleared the cross bar by a foot and sailed harmlessly
out of play.
Norwich took a 1-0 lead at the 14:52 mark of the first half when
Eric Weir deposited the first of his two goals on the afternoon
into the lower left corner of the net behind Lyndon goalkeeper
Jason Gray (East thetford, Vt.). Garrett Shufelt assisted on the
play.
Weir struck again early in the second half when Bridger Van Ness
sent a ball across the goal mouth to Weir, who drilled a shot into
the center of the net for a 2-0 Cadet lead.
Gray made six saves in the contest for Lyndon while Toomey
turned aside seven. The Hornets outshot Norwich 21-14 in the
game.
