Lyndonville, VT - Elms College found the back of the net three times in the first 18 minutes and went on to spoil Vermont State University Lyndon's first home men's soccer game of the season, handing the Hornets a 4-1 defeat. Elms improved to 2-0-1 on the season while Lyndon fell to 0-1-1.
Elms got on the board in the 11th minute when Dru Fairthorne poked a pass from Ramaul Morgan past Lyndon goalkeeper Gavin Getz (Helotes, TX). Fairthorne's unassisted goal less than a minute later made it 2-0, Blazers. Then in the 18th minute, Andrew Velasquez tallied to make it 3-0, Elms. Lyndon got on the board in the 33rd minute when Eric Shorter (Acworth, GA) scored off of an assist from Jett Burnett (Layton, UT).
Neither team was able to break through for much of the second half, until Lyndon was called for a foul in the box in the 74th minute. Fairthorne converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the game, extending the Elms lead to 4-1. That's how it ended.
Elms had the better of the play most of the game, outshooting Lyndon, 21-2, and earning eight corner kicks to none for the Hornets. Getz made two saves and allowed two goals before leaving the game due to injury in the 15th minute. Cayden Cowley (Pahrump, NV) replaced Getz and made six saves while allowing two more goals the rest of the way. Blazer goalkeeper Jack Bosquet went the distance, making one save and earning the win.
Lyndon will return to the pitch on Wednesday evening when they travel to New England College for another non-conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
