Lyndonville, VT - The shorthanded Vermont State University Lyndon women's tennis team dropped their season opening non-conference match against Vermont State University Castleton on Friday afternoon. The visiting Spartans swept all nine matches to come away with a 7-0 victory. Castleton improved to 2-1 on the season.
The Spartans picked up a forfeit win at third doubles, then made quick work of the Hornets in the top two flights to grab the doubles point. Brooke Hecker and Olivia Rutkowski were 6-1 winners over Megan Richardson (Essex Junction, VT) and Olivia Cordova (Craig, CO) at number one, while Andrea Rodriguez and Grace Pluff defeated Alyssa Gerrish (Georgia, VT) and Kaylee Moore (Brandon, VT), 6-0, at number two.
Singles play was all Castleton. After forfeit wins in the fifth and sixth flights, Hecker, Rutkowski, Maggie McKearin, and Grace Pluff were all 6-0, 6-0 winners in their respective flights, knocking off Richardson, Cordova, Gerrish, and Moore.
The Hornets will open North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Vermont State University Johnson. Match time is 12:00 noon.
