Johnson, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's tennis team opened North Atlantic Conference play with a 5-2 victory over in-state rival Vermont State University Johnson on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets evened their season record at 1-1 and snapped a 43 match losing skid that stretched over the past five seasons. The match was Johnson's season opener.
Lyndon jumped in front by sweeping both doubles matches. Chloe Murphy (Manchester, NH) and Megan Richardson (Essex Junction, VT) were 6-2 winners over Johnson's Caitlyn Morey and Brooklyn Porter in the first flight. Alyssa Gerrish (Georgia, VT) and Kaylee Moore (Brandon, VT) followed that up with a 6-4 victory over Rose Oakland and Roselyn Gibbons at number two.
Aracely Delgado-Juarez (LaBelle, FL) picked up a win by default at fifth singles, giving Lyndon a 3-0 advantage. Richardson clinched the win for the Hornets with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Porter at second singles. Morey's 6-0, 7-5 win over Murphy at first singles got Johnson on the board. With the match decided, the Hornets and Badgers split the two remaining singles flights, with Gerrish besting Oakland, 8-5, at three and Gibbons knocking off Moore, 8-4, at four.
The Hornets will travel to Plymouth State University for a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon, September 22nd. Doubles play will start things off at 4:00 pm.
