Henniker, NH - Vermont State University Lyndon kept New England College off of the scoreboard for over 42 minutes of Wednesday's women's soccer game. The host Pilgrims broke through late in the first half, then pulled away in the second stanza for a 5-0 non-conference win over the Hornets. NEC improved to 2-1 on the season, while Lyndon fell to 1-2.
NEC controlled play throughout the first half, unleashing 29 shots, including 12 on goal. Lyndon goalkeeper Aracely Delgado-Juarez (LaBelle, FL) was up to the challenge, however, stopping the first 11 shots she faced. In the 43rd minute, the Pilgrims finally broke through when Ava Hudson launched a long shot over the head of Delgado-Juarez and into the goal. That would be the only score heading into the half.
NEC would continue to control the play as the second half began. In the 57th minute, Lyndon was called for a foul in the box and Michelina Follis converted the ensuing penalty kick to make it 2-0, Pilgrims. The Pilgrims then put the game away when they scored three times in a six and a half minute stretch, starting in the 72nd minute. Maddy Day picked up the first score, followed by Hudson's second goal of the game. Grace Houde wrapped up the scoring in the 78th minute.
The Pilgrims unleashed 50 shots in the game, including 23 shots on goal, while the Hornets were held without a shot. Delgado-Juarez made 28 stops in the Lyndon goal.
Lyndon is off for ten days, then returns to the pitch on September 19th, when the Hornets open North Atlantic Conference play at Thomas College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
