Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon baseball team came up on the short end of both ends of Wednesday's North Atlantic Conference doubleheader. The Eagles improved to 17-16 overall and 15-5 in conference with the sweep, while the Hornets fell to 15-20 on the season and 11-9 in conference.
Game 1 - Husson 11, VTSU Lyndon 0
Leading 1-0, Husson broke the game open with a seven run fourth inning. Matt Holmes capped off the rally with a three run home run. Preston Libby added three hits and four runs batted in and Liam Kelley also notched three hits.
While Husson touched up Lyndon pitching for 17 hits, the Hornets couldn't get anything going against Eagle starter Cam Rendell . Tredell Blow's (Yorktown, VA) fourth inning single was Lyndon's only hit, as Rendell struck out seven and walked three in earning the win. Nathan Bigelow (East Hampton, CT), the second of five Hornet pitchers, took the loss.
Game 2 - Husson 12, VTSU Lyndon 8 - 8 innings
Lyndon led 2-1 after two and a half innings and appeared to break the game open with a five run third. Jeren Harrison's (Charlotte, NC) three run home run gave the Hornets a seemingly comfortable 7-1 lead. However Husson began to chip away. Hunter Curtis led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to cut the Hornet lead to 8-6. Then Preston Libby's two out two run double tied the game. When the Hornets were retired in the bottom of the seventh, the game headed to extra innings.
Joe Hamelin's bases loaded single in the top of the eighth inning put Husson in front. The Eagles tacked on three more runs, then retired the Hornets to steal the win.
Holmes had three hits and Libby had a single, a double, and three runs batted in to pace Husson. Rendell and Colin Marshall also had two hits for the Eagles. Husson was also able to capitalize on five Hornet errors.
Eyon Tembreull (Vergennes, VT) had a big game at the plate for Lyndon. He went four for four with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Harrison and Blow added two hits apiece for the Hornets.
Ryan Garner pitched two innings of one hit scoreless relief to earn the win for Husson. Keegan Stephenson (Lander, WY) took the loss for the Hornets.
Lyndon will close out the regular season this weekend when they host the University of Maine at Farmington in a four game series. Doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday will both begin at noon. Prior to Saturday's games Lyndon will recognize their senior players. The Hornets go into the weekend needing one win to clinch the program's first NAC playoff berth since 2019.
