Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon softball team could only muster two hits across both ends of Saturday's North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against the University of Maine at Farmington. The visiting Beavers cruised to a pair of victories to improve to 9-16 on the season and 6-5 in NAC play. Lyndon fell to 2-14 overall and 0-8 in conference.
Game 1 - UMaine-Farmington 12, VTSU Lyndon 1
The Beavers plated five runs, four of them unearned, in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Maddie Pike hit a three run home run and Jessica Dow drove in three runs and scored three times. Emily Collins and Lisa Truchin each had a pair of hits.
Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) had both Lyndon hits, a single leading off the game and a third inning double. Riley Mcnamara (Manchester, NH) walked leading off the Hornet fourth inning and later scored the only Lyndon run when she came home as Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) grounded into a fielder's choice.
Natalie Simpson picked up the complete game win in the circle, striking out seven against three walks. McNamara pitched a complete game for Lyndon in the loss. She allowed eight earned runs and 11 hits.
Game 2 - UMaine-Farmington 19, VTSU Lyndon 0
Winning pitcher Emma DeBoer was the story of the nightcap, as she retired all 15 Hornet batters that she faced for a perfect game. The Beavers pounded out 16 hits and capitalized on nine Hornet errors. Melissa Mayo, Dow, and Pike all had three hits to lead the attack. Dow and Pike each drove in four runs, while Mayo scored three times.
McNamara pitched another complete game for Lyndon. She allowed ten earned runs and was tagged with the loss.
Lyndon will return to the diamond on Sunday afternoon when they host Thomas College in another NAC doubleheader. Prior to the scheduled noon first pitch the Hornets will recognize their senior softball players.
