Lyndonville, VT - Vermont State University Lyndon couldn't keep up with Thomas College in either end of Sunday's North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader. The visiting Terriers jumped out to an early lead and cruised to wins in both games, improving their overall record to 18-17, and their conference mark to 11-3. The Hornets fell to 2-16 on the season and 0-10 in conference.
Game 1 - Thomas 15, VTSU Lyndon 0
Thomas plated six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Maeve Hickok homered and doubled, driving in a pair of runs and scoring twice. Megan Oberholzer had two hits, drove in two, and scored twice. Ten different Terriers hit safely, accounting for 12 hits.
The Hornets could only muster one hit against Thomas pitching, a fifth inning single from Megan Richardson (Essex Junction, VT).
Oberholzer started in the circle for Thomas and pitched two scoreless innings before bring relieved by Lillian Noyes. Noyes kept the Hornets off the scoreboard over the final three innings and picked up the win, Riley McNamara (Manchester, NH) pitched a complete game for Lyndon and absorbed the loss.
Game 2 - Thomas 15, VTSU Lyndon 2
The Terriers again took command right from the start, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Hickok had another big game with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Brooklyn Federico hit a home run and scored three times. Mackenzie Toner had two hits and drove in three runs.
The Hornets had four hits, with two coming from Morgan Doolan (Lancaster, NH). Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) had an RBI single and Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) had the other Lyndon hit.
Federico struck out eight and allowed one unearned run over four innings to get the win. McNamara pitched another complete game in taking the loss.
Prior to Sunday's games the Hornets honored their four senior players: Doolan, Gannon, Gonzalez, and Ella Huntington (Taylorsville, UT). Each senior was joined on the field by family members and friends, was presented with tokens of appreciation for their contributions to Lyndon softball.
Lyndon will go on the road Tuesday for a conference doubleheader at Lesley University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
