Hornet baseball routs UMPI then completes sweep with last inning rally

Presque Isle, ME - Trailing from one and down to their final strike, the Vermont State University Lyndon baseball team rallied for four seventh inning runs to complete a doubleheader sweep of the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday afternoon.  The Hornets improved to 13-17 on the season and 9-7 in the NAC, while the Owls fell to 7-20 overall and 5-13 in confernce play.

Game 1 - VTSU Lyndon 18, UMaine-Presque Isle 1

The Hornets pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of four Owl errors.  Sean Dunton (Quechee, VT) led the hit parade with three singles, foru runs batted in, three runs scored, and three stolen bases.  Austin Bigelow (East Hampton, CT) had a single and a double, drove in three runs, and scored three times.  Eyon Tembreull (Vergennes, VT) had a double and three RBIs and Cesar Cisneros (National City, CA) and Aaron LeFrancois (Rutland, VT) scored three times apiece.

Mitchell Kley had two hits for UMPI and drove in the only Owl run.

Nathan Bigelow (East Hampton, CT), the second of three Lyndon pitchers, got credit for the win with four innings of three hit scoreless relief.  Hornet Matt Gonyeau (St. Albans, VT) allowed one run in the first two innings and Isaiah Gutierrez pitched a scoreless seventh to close the game.  Owl starter Matthew Pelletier took the loss after allowing eight runs over the first three innings.

Game 2 - VTSU Lyndon 6, UMaine-Presque Isle 3

The Owls took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.  After Jeren Harrison (Charlotte, NC) singled to lead off the inning, LeFrancois successfully moved hoim to second with a bunt.  Harrison moved to third on a Cisneros ground out, then Dunton walked and advanced to second uncontested.  Tembreull was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  That brought Tredell Blow (Yorktown, VA) to the plate against Owl starter Mike Langley.  Langley quickly got ahead in the count, 0-2, but Blow worked it to even.  Then after fouling a pitch off, Blow launched a double over the left fielder's head, scoring Harrison and Dunton to give Lyndon the lead.  Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA) followed with a two-run single, extending the lead to 6-3.  Carlos Rodriguez (La Mirada, CA) came on in the bottom of the seventh to retire the Owls and close out the game.

LeFrancois had two doubles and Doherty and Harrison each had a pair of hits.  Aiden Toy had two hits for the Owls.

Keegan Stephenson (Lander, WY) relieved Lyndon starter Mike Redmond (Plantation, FL) with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning,  He pitched out of a bases loaded jam and earned the wn when the Hornets overtook the Owls.  Rodriguez was credit with the save.  Langley took the loss for UMPI.

The Hornets and Owls will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday.  Fisrt pitch is scheduled for noon.
