Hornet baseball rallies for doubleheader split with Husson

Lyndonville, VT - After Husson University took a four-run lead in the fourth inning of Saturday's North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Vermont State University Lyndon, the Eagles appeared to be on their way to a doubleheader sweep of the Hornets.  However Lyndon rallied with six runs in their final two at bats to pull off the come from behind win and earn a split of the two games.  The Hornets moved to 10-16 on the season and 6-6 in conference play.  The Eagle are now 10-15 overall and 9-5 in the NAC.

Game 1 - Husson 18, VTSU Lyndon 4

Husson pounded out 17 hits and took advantage of seven Hornet errors to pull away for the win.  Matt Holmes had a huge game for the Eagles.  He recorded four hits including a home run and a double, Wes Piper had a home run and four runs batted in.  Liam Kelley had a single, a double, and a home run, and four RBIs.  Chris Lusignan started on the mound and went five innings to get the win.  He gave up all four Hornet runs on six hits with six strikeouts.  Noah Hurd allowed no runs and only one hit over the final four frames to pick up the save.

Ryan Alt (Poultney, VT) had a single and a double for the Hornets.  Eyon Tembreull (Vergennes, VT) and Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA) had Lyndon's other extra base hits, a triple and a double respectively.  Isaiah Guterrez (Nashua, NH), the second of five Hornet pitchers, took the loss.

Game 2 - VTSU Lyndon 9, Husson 8

Doherty was the offensive catalyst for the Hornets, who rallied from a 7-3 deficit to pull off a win.  He had a pair of key two-run base hits to spark the Lyndon rally.  Matt Gonyeau (St. Albans, VT) hit a solo home run leading off the Hornet sixth inning to bring Lyndon within one run at 7-6.  Tembreull had two hits and scored twice.  Sean Dunton (Quechee, VT) and Tredell Blow (Yorktown, VA), had the other Lyndon hits.  Auston Bigelow (East Hampton, CT) came on to pitch the final two innings, allowing only a solo home run to Husson's Cam Rendell in the seventh inning and earning the win.

Jackson Lizzotte and Holmes also homered for the Eagles.  Lizzotte's two run shot in the third inning gave Husson a 3-0 lead and Holmes' three-run homer in the fourth put Husson in front by four,.  Rendell finished with three hits and Preston Libby had two.  Tanner Audyatis, the last of three Husson pitchers, took the loss.

The Hornets and Eagles are scheduled to wrap up their four-game series with a Sunday afternoon doubleheader starting at noon.
