Stowe, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's tennis team won their third straight match on Thursday evening, defeating Vermont State University Castleton in a non-conference match at Topnotch Tennis. The Hornets improved to 4-5 with the win, while the Spartans fell to 2-6.
Castleton defaulted the third doubles match but still took a 1-0 lead when they captured both the first and second flight sets. Charles Watson and Jackson Paquin bested David Gratton (Newport, VT) and Bryan Nazario (Little Elm, TX), 6-1, at second doubles. Tanner Ciufo and Remy Maynard followed with a 6-3 victory over Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) and Jack Giarrusso (Greenville, NY) in the first flight.
Lyndon picked up a default win at sixth singles to even the match at 1-1. Nazario's 6-0, 6-0 win over Paquin at fourth singles put the Hornets in front, but Watson squared the match again with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Parker Pierce (Woodstock, VT) at number three. Gratton bested Maynard, 6-4, 6-1, at two, then McIntyre clinched the win for the Hornets with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ciufo in first singles. With the match decided, Castleton's Addy Boynton won the most competitive match of the day in a third set tiebreaker, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) ove Lyndon's Joe Buchanan (McCordsville, IN).
Lyndon will close out its season on Saturday with a doubleheader against Vermont State University Johnson. Play will begin with a North Atlantic Conference match at 11:00 am, followed by a non-conference contest. The matches will be played at Prouty Beach in Newport, VT. Prior to play the Hornets will recognize their senior players.
