Hornet baseball can't hold early lead in loss to Middlebury

Middlebury, VT - Vermont State University Lyndon fell to Middlebury, 16-6, in a non-conference baseball game at Middlebury on Wednesday afternoon.  Middleb ury improved to 11-5 with the win, while Lyndon fell to 4-9.

The Hornets struck first, as Ryan Alt's (Poultney, VT) sacrifice fly in the first inning brought home Cesar Cisneros (National City, CA) for a 1-0 lead.  Lyndon extended its advantage in the second inning when Carter Paquette (East Barre, VT) doubled to drive in Matt Doherty (Middlebury, VT) and Tredell Blow (Lyndon Center, VT).  Paquette later scored on an error, giving the Hornets a 4-0 lead.

Middlebury responded in the bottom of the second with a two-RBI double from Anthony Pellagrini, followed by an RBI sacrifice fly from Brayden Mathews, cutting Lyndon's lead to 4-3.  The Panthers took the lead in the third inning when Sam Gersch hit a three-run home run.

Lyndon tied the game with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth inning.  Jeren Harrison (Charlotte, NC) put the Hornets back in front with a solo home run over the left field fence.  Aaron LeFrancois (Rutland, VT) then singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an error, making it a 6-6 ball game.

Middlebury took control with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 11-6 lead.  The Panthers added three insurance runs in the sixth inning and and two more in the seventh to end the game.

Middlebury's top performers included Gersch, who scored three runs, hit a home run, and drove in four runs.  Brian Olson had two hits and three RBIs and Anthony Pellagrini, added a double and two RBIs.  Carter Chi, who scored and drove in runs.

For Lyndon, Carter Paquette (Shoreham, VT)  led the offense with a double and two RBIs, while Cisneros, Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA), and Blow each had multi-hit games. Jeren Harrison (St. Johnsbury, VT) contributed a solo home run in the fourth inning.

On the mound, Owen McCandless earned the win for Middlebury, while Matthew Chamberlain (Burlington, VT) took the loss for the Hornets.

Lyndon will open North Atlantic Conference play when they take on Thomas College in a four game series this weekend.  Games will be played at Franklin Pierce University's Pappas Field in Rindge, NH.  First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
