Hornets drop slugfest to Elmira

Myrtle Beach, SC - The Vermont State University Lyndon baseball team wrapped up their stay at Ripken Experience Spring Training by taking on Elmira College on Monday morning.  In a game that featured 30 hits, the Hornets weren't able to keep up with the Soaring Eagles and came up on the short end of a 14-9 score.  Elmira remained unbeaten in three games this season, while Lyndon fell to 1-2.

Elmira jumped in front with three runs in the top of the first inning and five more in the top of the second.  The Hornets would scratch their way back into the game, however, and closed within four runs at 13-9 following a three run seventh.  That would be as close as the Hornets would get, as the Soaring Eagles tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning to account for the final score.

Elmira pounded out 18 hits in the game.  Bradley Buttice led the way with a double, two singles, and four runs batted in.  Jordan Barthel also delivered three hits and scored twice.  Connor Stone had a pair of hits and drove in three runs, while Xander Canfield had a single and a double, drove in three, and scored twice.

Eyon Tembreull (Vergennes, VT) went four for five at the plate to pace Lyndon.  He had three singles and a double and drove in two runs.  James Ripley (Jeffersonville, VT) had two singles and a double, two runs batted in, and three runs scored.  Cesar Cisneros (National City, CA) added a pair of hits, while Ryan Alt (Poutley, VT) had a double and four RBIs.

Brennen Goin, the second of three Elmira pitchers, picked up the win, while Lyndon starter Adam Guenther (Southington, VT) took the loss.

The Hornets now return north and are off until Saturday, March 14th, when they travel to Anna Maria College for a non-conference game.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
