Lyndonville, VT - For the third straight game the Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball team rallied from a double digit second half deficit to get within one possession in the game's final minutes. Unfortunately for the Hornets, for the third straight game they were unable to get over the hump, as the State University of New York at Delhi held off Lyndon for a 97-90 North Atlantic Conference victory on Friday evening. With the win, SUNY Delhi improved to 6-14 overall and 5-8 in the conference. Lyndon fell to 6-13 on the season and 4-8 in NAC play.
Delhi took control from the onset of the game, building a lead of as much as 14 points in the opening half. Lyndon closed the first half on a strong note, however, and cut the Bronco lead to just 59-44 at intermission.
Matt Doyle's (Whitesboro, NY) tip-in basket to start the second half brought the Hornets within three points, but Delhi scored the next nine points to push their lead back to double figures at 58-46 with 18:13 to go. Delhi maintained their cushion, going up by as many as 15 points, 86-71, with 4:03 remaining. Lyndon clawed its way back, however, and pulled within three points, 93-90, on a Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) basket and free throw with 42 seconds to go. That would be as close as the Hornets would get, as Delhi converted four straight free throws in the closing seconds to secure the win.
Kai Harvey led all scorers with 33 points, 24 of them coming in the first half. Harvey also filled his stat line with five assists and six steals. Abdul-Jaleel Ibrahim added 19 points and five steals and Adan Madera notched a double double with15 points and 11 rebounds.Jason Tagios also reached double figures with ten points.
Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) paced Lyndon with 25 points, seven assists, and five steals. McIntyre added 23 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Doyle had a big game at both ends of the court, posting 21 points and a modern era (2008-present) program record 20 rebounds. His 15 defensive rebounds also set a new program standard. The previous record of 19 rebounds was shared by Brad Durr (Windham, CT), who reached the mark against SUNY Coblsekill in 2008, and Kyle Cary (Selkirk, NY), who matched Durr's total against the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 2019. The all-time record across all levels and affiliations is held by Jim Kelly, who pulled down 27 boards against the University of Massachusetts-Boston in 1977.
Lyndon returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host the State University of New York at Cobleskill at 1:00 pm.
