Lyndonville, VT – The Vermont State University Lyndon men's soccer team dropped an 8-0 non-conference decision to visiting New England College on a wet and rainy Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field.
The Pilgrims struck early, finding the net twice in the opening nine minutes. Cooper Foster headed home a corner kick from Amit Solomon at the 8:11 mark to open the scoring, then Solomon doubled the lead just 33 seconds later off a cross from Ezekiel Weir. Foster made it 3-0 midway through the half on another setup from Solomon, and Levi Campbell capped the first-half scoring with a goal in the 45th minute.
New England College continued to apply pressure after intermission, tacking on four more goals. Wyatt Flibbert scored less than four minutes into the second half, and Weir followed with a goal of his own at the 58:13 mark. Chase Gurtowsky and Joey Magliozzi closed out the scoring with late strikes to account for the final margin.
The Pilgrims outshot the Hornets 34-2, including a 22-0 advantage in shots on goal, and held a 15-2 edge in corner kicks. Zinabu McNeice (Brattleboro, VT) accounted for the only Lyndon shots. Hornet starting goalkeeper Joe Buchanan (McCordsville, IN) made 12 saves before being relieved by Parker Pierce (Woodstock, VT). Meanwhile NEC keepers Lukas Tate and Matt Guzman did not face a shot on goal.
With the loss, Lyndon falls to 0-3 on the season, while NEC improves to 3-0. The Hornets will return to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Colby-Sawyer College for a 7:00 pm non-conference matchup.
