Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Hornet women's tennis opens the season with two against Husson

Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's tennis team took to the courts for the first time this season on Saturday.  The Hornets played host to Husson University at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center.  Unfortunately for the hosts, the visiting Eagles came away with a pair of 7-0 victories, the first a North Atlantic Conference matchup and the second a non-conference affair.

Match 1 - Husson 7, VTSU Lyndon 0

From the doubles courts, it was a dominant display by the visitors. In the No. 1 slot,  Julia Barber and Joey Lynn Ramsdell of Husson opened with a 6-1 win over Hawa Mubarak (Burlington, VT) and Chloe Murphy (Manchester, NH).  The No. 2 doubles pairing of Katelyn Cotter and Olivia Christensen followed suit, defeating Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) and Megan Richardson (Essex Junction, VT) 6-0.  The third doubles point was awarded to Husson by forfeit.

In singles play, Husson continued to roll.  Barber secured the No. 1 singles point with straight sets (6-0, 6-0) over Mubarak.  Ramsdell (No. 2) and Cotter (No. 3) matched that scoreline in their matches.  Christensen (No. 4) downed Richardson, 6-1, 6-0.  The final two singles points at No. 5 and No. 6 were won by Husson by forfeit, sealing the sweep.

Match 2 - Husson 7, VTSU Lyndon 0

Shortly after the conference match, Husson again blanked Lyndon 7-0 in the non-conference matchup.  In doubles, Husson's Kayla Lockhart and Anah Albert claimed the No. 1 match, defeating Mubarak and Murphy 6-0.  At No. 2, Christensen and Mallory Beaulieu shut out Gannon and Richardson 6-0. The third doubles point was again a forfeit in Husson's favor.

The singles matches saw similar results.  The No. 1 singles match ended in a retirement:  Lockhart led Mubarak 6-3, 4-0 when the Lyndon player could not continue, giving Husson the point.  Beaulieu (No. 2), Sadie May (No. 3), and Elizabeth Kelly (No. 4) all closed out straight-set victories to move the score to 4-0.  The final two singles at Nos. 5 and 6 were forfeited by Lyndon, completing the 7-0 sweep.

Husson improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the NAC.

The Hornets will return to action on Sunday when they host Thomas College in another doubleheader.  The first match, a North Atlantic Conference contest, will begin at 11:00 am, with a non-conference match to follow.
