Game Recap: Softball |

Hornet softball falls twice at SUNY Delhi

Oneonta, NY - The State University of New York at Delhi pushed across a run in the bottom half of the tenth inning to complete a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep of Vermont State University Lyndon on Friday afternoon.  The Broncos improved to 10-18 on the season and 3-5 in NAC play, while the Hornets fell to 6-19 overall and 3-5 in conference.

Game 1 - SUNY Delhi 9, VTSU Lyndon 2

Starting pitchers Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY) of Lyndon and Angelina Dickel of Delhi put up zeros through the first two and a half innings.  The Broncos broke through in the bottom of the third when Riley Martin tripled leading off, then scored on a wild pitch.  Back to back doubles from Stephanioe Huckabee and Carolina Watson produced another run, then Danielle Seymour's base hit drove in Watson to make it 3-0, Delhi.  Seymour eventually came around to score an unearned run, giving the Broncos a 4-0 lead through three.

Lyndon got on the board in the top of the fourth inning.  Riley McNamara (Manchester, NH) walked leading off, then moved to third on Sieairra Anderson's (Somersworth, NH) base hit.  McNamara scored when Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) grounded into a fielder's choice.

The Broncos plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  After Sidney Cooper singled leading off and Huckabee was hit by a pitch, Jaden Taylor delivered a two-run single through the right side to increase the Delhi lead to 6-1.

Lyndon attempted to stage a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning.  After Shyanne Glencross (Tilton, NH) walked, back to back singles from Gonzalez and Emily Anderson loaded the bases.  Ann Watkins (Los Angeles, CA) singled back up the middle to drive in Glencross.  However Gonzalez was gunned down at the plate trying to score to end the threat.

Delhi extended their lead with three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Huckabee and Watson started things with back to back base hits, then Taylor reached on an error to load the bases.  Seymour's sacrifice fly scored Huckabee, then Carolina Bernard's base hit drove in Watson.  Hannah Caughey grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home Taylor with the final run.

Dickel picked up the win with a complete game in the circle.  She allowed eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks.  Emily Anderson took the loss for Lyndon after allowing five earned runs and ten hits with three strikeouts over 3.2 innings of work.

Game 2 - SUNY Delhi 3, VTSU Lyndon 2 - 10 innings

The nightcap unfolded as a pitcher's duel between McNamara and Seymour.  Cooper led off the home first inning with a base hit and eventually scored on Huckabee's double, giving Delhi the early 1-0 lead.  That would be the only damage the Broncos would do against McNamara throught the first five innings.

Meanwhile, the Hornets weren't able to get much going against Seymour until the top of the fourth inning.  Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ) doubled with one out.  McNamara then helped her own cause with an RBI single.  Seairra Anderson's base hit moved McNamara to third, then Glencross then lined a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring McNamara to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead.

Delhi manufactured the tying run in the home half of the sixth inning.  Cayla Moroni led off with a base hit, then advanced to second on Cooper's sacrifice bunt.  Moroni moved to third when pinch hitter Julian Ponce grounded out, and a Hornet error on the play allowed Moroni to score the tying run.

The game would remain tied at 2-2 heading into extra innings.  In the bottom of the tenth Bernard was placed at second due to the international tiebreaker.  Seymour's sacrifice bunt moved Bernard to third, then Adrienne Neff's sacrifice fly to right field drove in Barnard to give Delhi the walkoff win.

Both pitchers went the full ten innings.  Seymour allowed nine hits and struck out six to pick up the win.  McNamara took the loss despite only allowing one earned run on seven hits.

Seairra Anderson had three hits on the day to bring her career total to 101.

The Hornets and Broncos will play two more games at the Cooperstown All Star Village on Saturday.  First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am.
