Saint Johnsbury, VT - In a match that lasted well over four hours and featured many highly competitive matchups, the State University of New York at Delhi came away with a 6-3 victory over Vermont State University Lyndon in Sunday evening's Empire 8 Conference East Division men's tennis match. With the win, Delhi improved to 2-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference. Lyndon fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the E8.
The first match to be completed, first doubles, was an indicator of how close the day's matches would be. The Delhi pairing of Benjamin Andersen and Nicholas Vanhouten prevailed in a tiebreaker, 7-4, over Lyndon's Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and David Gratton (Newport, VT). At number three, Devin Guerrieri and Gavin Bonczkowski rallied from 3-0 down to overtake the Hornets' Gilbert Flores (Windted, CT) and James Salvas (Morrisville, VT), 8-4. The Broncos completed the doubles sweep when Nolan Kleinsasser and Joseph Maccarrone edged Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) and Stephen Wutzl (Brookfield, CT) 11-9 in a tiebreaker.
Lyndon got themselves right back in the match when play turned to singles. Blais got the Hornets on the board with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 win over Anderson at first singles. McIntyre then closed out Vanhouten in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, at number three. Wutzl pulled Lyndon even with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Maccarrone at number four.
With the match now even, Guerrieri rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory over Gratton at second singles. Trying to keep Lyndon alive, Salvas battled back from 0-4 to force a first set tiebreaker, but Kleinsasser ultimately prevailed, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 to take the fifth flight and clinch the match for Delhi. In the final match of the night, Bonczkowski was a 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 winner over Flores at number six.
The Hornets will return to action next Saturday with a pair of matches against Vermont State University Johnson. The conference match will begin at noon, with a non-conference match to follow.
