Lyndonville, VT - Bridgewater State University swept both ends of Tuesdya's non-conference softball doubleheader against Vermont State University Lyndon. The Bears evened their season record at 16-16, while the Hornets fell to 6-17.
Game 1 - Bridgewater State 10, VTSU Lyndon 0
Olyvia Mendonca tossed a complete game two hit shutout to lead the Bears to the win. Riley Fitzgerald had two hits and drove in two runs for Bridgewater. Sydney Schaefer also drove in two and scored twice.
Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY) and Seairra Anderson (Somersworth, NH) had Lyndon's only hits. Emily Anderson started in teh circle for the Hornets and was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs, six earned, and four hits with one strikeout over 3.1 innings.
Game 2 - Bridgewater State 7, VTSU Lyndon 1
Lyndon struck first in the nightcap. Ann Watkins (Los Angeles, CA beat out a bunt single leading off the bottom of the first inning. She moved to second on Lindsey Gannon's (Beverly, MA) sacrifice bunt, then scored on Blake Southworth's (Bethel, VT) base hit.
The lead stood until the top of the third inning, when Bridgewater capitalized on three Lyndon errors to score four unearned runs. Amelia Blake's bases loaded single was the big hit for the Bears.
The Bears tacked on a run in the fifth inning when Ella Haley scored on the back end of a double steal. Bridgewater manufactured two more runs in the top fo the seventh, thanks to a pair of Hornet errors and a wild pitch.
Blake had two hits, drove in a run, and scored twice. McKayla Cusack went the distance in the circle to collect the win. She allowed only the first inning run on four hits and recorded six strikeouts without walking a batter.
Lyndon again struggled to get the bats going. Other than the two first inning hits, the Hornets could only muster a third inning single from Southworth and a seventh inning base hit by Seairra Anderson. Riley McNamara (Manchester, NH) went the distance in the circle, only allowing one earned run and five hits while striking out three and walking seven.
Prior to Tuesday's doubleheader the Hornets recognized and honored their five seniors: Emily Anderson, Seairra Anderson, Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ), Bailey Quire (Gainesville, FL), and Blake Southworth. They were joined on the field by family members, friends, and their teammates.
Lyndon will wrap up the regular season on the road this weekend with six North Atlantic Conference games, starting with a doubleheader at the State University of New York at Delhi. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm. The Hornets and Broncos will run it back with a noon doubleheader on Sunday. Then the regular season will conclude with a noon Sunday doubleheader at the State University of New York at Cobleskill. The Sunday doubleheader is a reschedule of the twin bill betwen the Hornets and the Fighting Tigers that was scheduled to be played at Lyndon last Saturday but was rained out.
